Jeholopterus was a small insectivorous anurognathid pterosaur from the Jurassic period in China. It was found with very well-preserved skin and protofeathers, and long bristles near its face, likely for helping to funnel insects into its wide mouth the way today's nighthawks and nightjars do.

David Peters, a source of some controversy in the pterosaur paleontological community, has hypothesized that this species was actually a parasite on larger vertebrates. He claims what others call skull fragments that were found near the face is actually a pair of long snake-like fangs, and that Jeholopterus would have fed in a similar fashion to today's vampire bats. The general consensus is that this is a bunch of nonsense, but a vampiric pterosaur makes for some pretty cool speculation, and I wouldn't be surprised if something like that were eventually discovered in the fossil record.

Jinfengopteryx is a troodontid, though when it was first discovered it was considered a bird and a relative of Archaeopteryx. Troodontids have an unusual feature shared only with owls and no other known animal - their ears are asymmetrical, with one ear higher on the skull than the other. This allows for a much easier time pinpointing the location of something the animal hears, and this, plus the large eyes in this family, suggest that troodontids, like owls, may have been nocturnal or crepuscular predators - although the most complete Jinfengopteryx skeleton had seeds in its digestive tract, and based on tooth shape, it and other troodontids may have been omnivorous.

Last one for today: a Microraptor gui, in true color.

I've written about these little guys before. We know they were a glossy iridescent black, and we know they were either very common or lived in large flocks, or both. They seem to be the Cretaceous' answer to crows or blackbirds.

Just a quick one this morning, mostly a result of me trying to picture how those funny arms Mononykus/Shuvuuia and their relatives have could be actually useful for getting at food.

Edit: I re-cropped the image and added a touch of color via some gradients. Just playing around but I think I like this version better. The original drawing is within the cut.

Drawing rotting stumps is actually pretty fun, I've decided.

I think Microraptor will be next. Drawing iridescence should be interesting.

I don't think anyone actually reads this but if you are, hello! I'm just sort of going to use this as a place to dump and organize art for now, I think. If anyone actually is reading this and wants me to put images behind a cut, let me know.

Alvarezsaur, based on Mononykus/Shuvuuia. While these insectivores are speculated to have used their claws to tear open logs in search of termites, they were also fast, agile runners and likely would have taken opportunity of a passing dragonfly.

WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST DRAW

Hey everyone, I'm back from Tinian (I know, I know, you didn't even know I was gone). Today, I bring you lots of sketches, done over the past three years but mostly weighted toward things done more recently. This is by no means the entire contents of my sketchbook, obviously, but just a few highlights I thought people might be interested in seeing. As will not surprise you, the majority of my sketchbook, academic exercises aside, consists of drawings of birds and various bits of fanart. Shocking, I know.

Aplomado falcon on yucca
Weird made-up birds
Ducks
Pied currawongs
Hedgehog
Crows
Ibis sketches
Glossy Ibis
Tex
Collared kingfisher
Misc. Harem AU stuff
Rufous fantail
More AU stuff
Gamma
Delta
More Tex

Edit: Obviously not out of my sketchbook, but I thought I'd just tack it on to the end here: Omega

Anchiornis huxleyi, a troodontid (big brained little theropod, cousins of the dromaeosaurs like Velociraptor), is our first full-color dinosaur! For those who haven't been keeping up, recent studies of dinosaur feathers on a microscopic level have revealed that melanosomes, the part of a cell that produces melanin, which gives things color, have different structures depending on which color they produce. Based on that discovery, we can now identify what colors dinosaur feathers had if the melanosomes were preserved in the fossil. So exciting!

And so adorable! )

Okay guys, I'm seriously thrilled by this. I know some of you probably realize how much I love dinosaurs. I used to draw them a lot - even before we knew they had feathers, but especially since then. And now we get to learn how pretty they really were! omg I love biology.

Today I have an art recommendation for all of you - James in particular, for some reason I think you will really enjoy these. Please be redirecting your browsers to the surrealist digital photography of Stefano Bonazzi, particularly this series called "The Last Day On Earth". The other galleries on his site are fun as well.

Also, happy birthday, Mandy! I think perhaps that finally you are no longer a loli.

I guess I felt like I needed something to raeg at this morning, so I watched Jesus Camp. Was a little bit disturbed by the fact that I wasn't as horrified at it as I feel like I should be, but maybe I'm just apathetic. Some of those kids impressed me quite a bit, actually - it's cool how passionate and knowledgeable they are about something, and Levi the little preacher kid was something else, man. Like a mini-adult, and a better public speaker and speechwriter than many college-age students I know. I just... agh, if only they were passionate and knowledgeable about something other than Evangelism, you know? I guess that's the thing. If those kids were into anything else it'd be awesome, but instead they'll grow up and become the sort of people you read about in the papers and can't help but hate because of what they stand for.

On a totally different note, an online CD seller has a copy of Institut Polaire's EP The Fauna and the Flora and man, if it wasn't $17 bucks, I'd buy it right this instant. But instead I'm waffling, and probably won't end up buying it, even though it's pretty much the only one I've ever seen. Maybe I should just do like I did with Nico and see if the band has any mp3s they can send me in return for some delicious paypal. :/ Though I don't think I will. Unless I can't find their upcoming LP when it drops. If it ever actually does come out. It's been delayed by at least six months, now.

Also, I really really really want this book. A lot. And I think I need to get back into drawing already. I haven't done anything beyond little sketches for ages. I feel like I'm losing my artist cred.

Been a while since I've drawn much of anything, but my mom asked me to make a baby shower card for her, since a friend and co-worker of hers is due in two weeks. She wanted elephants. I delivered, even though it meant staying up until 4 am. Ow. See, she kinda neglected to tell me the shower was tomorrow. By which I now mean today.

D'aww elephants )

'Sup guys, this is totally the kind of meme I need to do right now because I haven't drawn anything in too long. :p And that's bad.

The first five people to comment in this post get to request a sketch of a subject/character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal.

Saw this on someone else's journal and decided it sounded fun. Note, of course, that I haven't actually participated in this meme yet; I plan on doing so once I've finished unpacking. :D

Anyway, the meme itself:
1. Pick a current RP character of yours
2. Draw them in whatever you wore today

Maria will get the special treatment today, because I don't really feel like trying to draw Shadow in a cami and tank top [Edit: SKIRT, not tank top, wtf brain]. Just no. No no no. >_>;;

Oh! Also. I'm home now, if it wasn't obvious from the unpacking statement.
