So I fail at keeping you guys informed. I am now into my first field season for my thesis project. tl;dr, I am investigating the use of restored wetlands and fish farm ponds by migrating shorebirds, which are largely in decline, and the interior subspecies of the Least Tern, which is endangered. The Mississippi River delta area in eastern Arkansas used to be mostly wetland, but it's now mostly rice and soy fields instead. But lately there's been an expansion of aquaculture in the region, and the federal government has also started a farm bill which provides monetary incentives for farmers to retire marginal farmland and restore it to its original wetland condition - or something resembling that, anyway. So both of these things may help shorebirds and terns which use the Mississippi River flyway each spring and fall, and it's my job to figure out how many and which species and what kinds of habitat conditions are associated with bird use in these areas. It's pretty cool, and I get to work with a lot of small businesses and local landowners that actually want to help birds by making their farming operations more bird-friendly.

For you, the internet, this means I am gone most days of the week, and come May, once classes are over, I will be gone even more, until early June sometime. So if something of major internet importance happens, inform me! As I will probably miss it. Also, spam me with lulzy nonsense. I always love that.

Now, for those few people on my flist who don't already know, RvB Season 10 starts on May 28th this year. At PAX, RT showed a very early version of a scene from the Freelancer part of the story, with yet another battle between the Freelancers and an Insurrectionist cell. Watch it. Now. :)

(Mini not-really-spoiler: Sigma is apparently voiced by Elijah Wood. Yes, really. Now they just need to do a live-action film version with Sean Bean as the Director... Either that, or John Reed needs to make some iconable faces for me.)

Oh man, I have posted too many times today. This is nuts.

First off, don't forget about the SOPA thing. That is incredibly important. Go do that.

Secondly, for those who do not have [livejournal.com profile] tinylongwing friended, go see my latest entry there if you want to read about Pele, a passage Cooper's hawk.

Finally, a little update on my life! Yesterday I had a meeting with the guy at Arkansas Game and Fish who is getting me funding for my MS project, now starting sometime in the spring. So that's still coming along, we're just waiting for the funding to make its way through the state government and on to us. It's a much slower process than it was supposed to be, but that's bureaucracy and science funding in the current political climate, unfortunately. It'll come through eventually.

More immediately exciting is that I am volunteering to help out with the project of another student in my graduate lab. Her project is focusing on optimal foraging of red-tailed hawks and American kestrels here in agricultural fields around Jonesboro. (Why is this not my project, you ask? Because I chose the one that had funding attached. Hawks are cool, but getting paid to go to grad school is even cooler.) What this means for us right now is that we have to go out and trap and band a bunch of redtails and kestrels, which is good fun.

I'm sure some of you have noticed the lack of communication from me in the past couple days. Well, that would be because I moved into my new apartment and do not have internet yet. But! Do not fret. Internet is coming. My roommate and I just have to find time to go and get some and then wait for it to be activated. Give it a week, hopefully less.

In other news Jonesboro is a pretty decent place, reminiscent of most small towns that only really exist because of a university. The downtown area is cute, and there is a nice little lake and forest park, and the farmer's market is pretty excellent despite its small size.

I have been busy making a cool new table perch similar to this one here, minus the walls, as well as crafting up some hoods and other bits and pieces, in anticipation of hopefully trapping a Cooper's hawk this year. I already passed my hunter's education test (94%, bitches) and so now am set for life in that regard. I also know way more about guns than I will ever need to know, but, eh. Oh well.

Anyway, today is the first day of classes, which for me means lots of meetings. In fact, I have to go to one right now. kbye.

I got everyone's mail! Woohoo! Beth, your package is sitting on the banister by the stairs here, I'm so sorry I haven't had a chance to mail it yet (due to an inability to actually make it to the post office during its open hours among other things) but it's all ready to go, so hopefully it'll be at your door soon. BUT. Thank you so much, and thank you too, Angela!

So I watched the Van Gogh ep (omg so wonderful, it's been a while since a Who ep made me teary) and The Lodger today, and all I have to say about The Lodger is:

Doctor: "What does the scanner say?"

Amy: "It's all nines!"

Lol Gareth Roberts, your /b/tard is showing.

That was an awesome little RP session, guys. Even if I now have a terrible headache for having stayed up so late. WE WON BY FIXING THE PLUMBING. I love us.

In other news... I've now seen the first ten minutes of the new RvB season, which is not called Resolution anymore; it is now Revelation. Guess Resolution sounded too final. And... well, I'd spazz under a cut but I'll save you guys the temptation and wait until Thursday. Because I'm nice like that. :) BUT OMG. OMG. AAAH. Okay I'm done.

Applesauce is delicious. Yum.

EDIT: HOLY SHIT THE REVELATION POSTER IS FREAKY OMG AND LOOK IT'S EPSILON HIDING BACK THERE HIII AAAAAHHHH

This will be the best Valentine's Day Caboose ever had! Surely his BFF will not rip his heart out of his chest. ;D

Also apparently Church has a canon birthday. January 30. My guess was so close!

Apologies for the lack of RP lately, by the way. I've actually had work, and then finally last night when I tried to get on, my computer refused to connect to the internet. I do believe the rain is to blame, as usual. Alas. So now I'll go make up for not tagging for the past couple days I suppose. Bah.

Okay so for those of you who I told the date of the winter OFA meet to, it has changed - it is now Sunday, January 31st. Not the 30th. Exact location TBA, but it will be somewhere around Corvallis. It is a one-day meet, so Melissa, as I said, no worries about housing unless we want to turn it into an event of sorts, if we want to do stuff around the Corvallis area on Saturday or Monday I suppose.

To everyone else: Happy New Year!

EDIT: I FINISHED CHURCH'S PROFILE PAGE. Well for the most part. I want to add a picture still. BUT. That was a lot of typing. Now I just have to tune up Shadow's a bit and I'll be set.

As a note to prospective Aphelion players - no you do not have to write a history anywhere near as long as I have. Also, lines like Hometown/Likes/Dislikes were added just for fun and are not required.

I stay on hold for ten minutes and get passed around and around until someone actually is able to read me my schedule, and it's for 8:30am to 3pm Tuesday once again. That's it. ffffffffuu-

>:(

Also they're supposed to pay us every two weeks and we totally just got our first paycheck yesterday. wat.

I'd say something about how they'd better watch out 'cause I work in the gun department (among other things like camping, etc) but... I know nothing about guns. So I think they're safe. They're all very nice people, anyway, but this store is so poorly managed right now.

Hey so who wants to come over RIGHT NOW and entertain me? Penny and Lucy are only so much company. Lucy sits around and sleeps, and Penny... does the same thing. Either that or wrestles with her jesses. Good times.

Every once in a while, things happen at work that make me laugh. Not so much entertaining occurrences, although yes, those do happen ("DA-AAD! CAN'T WE DO SOMETHING ILLEGAL FOR ONCE?!"). But no, I mean more along the lines of finding a set of fishing lures which proclaim themselves to be X-TREME ACTION SLASHBAIT! And I'm like... lol wat. Or the Under Armour company, whose motto for whatever reason is "Protect this house", and every time I walk past those huge words on the wall I have to try really hard not to crack up because all I can think of is the scary-looking buff guys in the photo right next to it going "We must protect this house! We must protect this house!!!" with the voices of the Battle Creek Reds.

Guy Fawkes Day is tomorrow! I am excited. I need to obtain some firewood. More oats, too, as apparently I don't have nearly as much oatmeal as I had believed. Luckily, that is a problem easily fixed.

Penny is being adorable right now, d'aww. I'd go get my camera and take a picture but she'd probably bate as I walked past, thus ruining the adorable. But when she's happy, or sleepy, her white flank feathers puff out like a fluffy little skirt, haha. She's gone from being a floppy falcon to a fluffy falcon in a week. While she's more reluctant than Amelia to do things, like eat or fly to the glove or any of that, she's much friendlier and more comfortable around me. She doesn't bite except for rarely, she doesn't bate as much, and I can perch her out in the kitchen here as I eat breakfast and type, and she spends about 20 minutes biting at her jesses before giving up and turning into the content fluffy bird she is right now. It might just be a personality thing, or it might be that Penelope is a suburban bird who is used to seeing people, whereas Amelia was from out in the farmland. Who knows.

From the CDC website:

What is CDC’s recommendation regarding "swine flu parties"?
"Swine flu parties" are gatherings during which people have close contact with a person who has 2009 H1N1 flu in order to become infected with the virus. The intent of these parties is for a person to become infected with what for many people has been a mild disease, in the hope of having natural immunity 2009 H1N1 flu virus that might circulate later and cause more severe disease.

SWINE FLU PARTIES? Wow. I hate people sometimes.

In other news, I did not go to work today. I am still not better, and my coughing kept me up all night last night. I won't give you all a laundry list of my symptoms because who really cares, but basically the only thing preventing me from going to get tested for H1N1 is that I just don't feel alert enough to drive right now. So I'm not going to say I do for sure have it, but I'm kinda wondering. Anyway, by tomorrow/Thursday I should no longer be contagious, at least. Here's hoping I haven't gotten too many other people sick in the process. I just wish I would stop coughing.

So hey, how about that Madras thing? :D Who's going for sure, and who's driving? I need to know this for sure. Especially so we know whether we actually do need to get a motel room or not.

My body is conspiring against me, I swear. I am bruised from Tuesday's concert, sore in a million places from lifting heavy boxes for two days in a row and standing nearly all that time, today began a most irritating time of the month, and I also seem to have come down with this uncontrollable hacking cough plus a headache plus I can't seem to get properly warm. Goddamnit. I just got over a cold, like, a week or two ago. At least I don't have work until noon tomorrow.
