"What are you doing?"

The dark hedgehog stood behind his companion, who was seated at a desk in the small GUN office. A slight look of confusion was on his usually stoic face as the bat scribbled away at something or other. Since when was Rouge an artist? Or, more accurately, when did she start trying to draw? The work in front of her could hardly be considered art, after all.

Rouge, meanwhile, was deep in concentration. The end of the pencil, marred with small bite marks, was currently bobbing back and forth in the air as she sketched intently. It took her a few seconds to realize Shadow had spoken, but immediately she swiveled around in the office chair to face him. "Shadow! When did you show up?" Her teeth flashed in a pleased smile.

"I just got back," he said, looking right past her to the drawing.

The bat followed his line of sight to that same piece of paper. Her lips settled into a contented smirk. "I was just witness to a jewel heist, believe it or not. The guy got away, but not before I got a good look at his face~"

"... A potato."

Unamused by her friend's sarcasm, Rouge rolled her eyes. "I'd like to see you do better, oh Ultimate Lifeform." She held the pencil toward him.

Shadow remained unmoved. "I'll keep your logical fallacy in mind next time you criticize me." Unfortunately, his humor seemed to be lost on the bat, judging by the look she was giving him. Before she could complain, he stated simply, "There's a sketch artist on the third floor."

"Yes, but he's busy. I'm supposed to do my best and organize my thoughts so I don't forget any of the details before he can talk to me," she explained, and studied her drawing, before adding a mole to the man's chin.

"... I see." Something about how Rouge was going about this seemed off to him, but he let it go. He didn't know much about police procedure, nor did he care. He had larger issues to worry about.

Without any attempt at a farewell, Shadow turned and headed for the door.

"Where are you going?" the bat asked, without lifting her eyes from her drawing.

He frowned. "I have business to attend to." And before she could stop him again, he'd gone.

Had he bothered to look back at her, he would have seen an all-too-pleased smirk on her face.

----------

"This morning, police arrested Johnathan Finch, 38--"

About to speed past, the dark hedgehog skidded to a stop in the middle of the sidewalk, almost causing a little old lady to drop her shopping bags. He stared at the screen in the shop window. The mug shot that had briefly replaced the cheery face of the news anchor was disturbingly familiar.

"-- ruby necklace that was part of the Kelvin heritage museum--"

Suddenly he recalled Rouge's attempt at a police sketch a couple weeks back. The man fit the image remarkably, despite looking less like a tuber.

"--insists he didn't do it. The necklace has yet to be found, but a search is--"

Shadow narrowed his eyes slightly. Of course, the man was guilty, why would anyone admit to stealing a neckace if they'd hidden it well enough? Obviously he-

And then another thought struck him. One that made even more sense. And before the anchor had finished covering her story, the hedgehog was racing off down the street.

----------

A newspaper landed on Rouge's desk with a loud smack. The bat jumped slightly in surprise, stowing her nail file away in a drawer. Who could possibly have-

"Oh, hello again, Shadow." She smiled up at the hedgehog, relieved it wasn't someone who was actually expecting her to be working right now.

He, on the other hand, looked far less amused. She glanced down at the headline in front of her.

"Oh good, so they got him! Guess my work is done~"

"Rouge."

"Hm~?"

"Why did you frame him?"

She looked at the hedgehog in disbelief for a split second, before rolling her eyes a little. "You know, I didn't think they'd actually find someone who looked like that, I just made him up off the top of my head. But, oh well, I'm sure he's done something wrong before~"

The blank look she received from the hedgehog could never be considered an accurate display of the emotion he was feeling right now - an emotion only ever reserved for her. What the hell, Rouge? At least she was good enough not to get caught.

"Enjoy your necklace," he said, and turned to leave. He had larger issues to worry about.

Had he bothered to look back at her, he would have seen that same all-too-pleased smirk once more.
